Being a member of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Search and Rescue Team is a privilege that comes with great rewards, but also much responsibility. The decision to apply to be a part of the Team should not be taken lightly as the work can be physically, mentally and emotionally challenging.
The SAR Team operates under the auspices of the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office and, as such, Team Members must act in a fashion that reflects well on that office.
You do not need any special skills or experience to join the team. They are looking for people with the right attitude and a genuine desire to help others without thought of personal reward or recognition. The good news is that with a commitment to attending training and missions, you can gain what you need to become a qualified SAR searcher. The Team members come from many different backgrounds and professions. Many find ways to share their personal skills as SAR Team members.
SAR Team members must be 18 years of age and residents of Siskiyou County.
The Application Process
The application process includes:
- Attend a monthly SAR Team meeting to meet the Team and become acquainted. They meet the 1st Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM (1830) at the Armory at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds on Fairlane Road, Yreka.

- Continue to attend the monthly SAR Team meetings.
- Be interviewed by the SAR Board.
- Complete a background investigation by the Sheriff’s Office including a fingerprint check through the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
- After the application is approved by the Sheriff, the member will be subject to a one year probationary period and be issued a yellow SAR t-shirt and hat.
During the probationary period, the member will
- Obtain the equipment listed on the basic equipment list (24-hour pack).
- Obtain basic first aid and CPR certification.
- Attend all regular meetings and training within the probationary period, unless excused.

Those successfully completing the probationary period will be considered full members and are subject to maintaining their First Aid/CPR and SARTECH certifications. They also need to attend 2/3 of all monthly meetings, training and callouts. Work commitments or illness are exceptions. Let the Team know what your personal issues are, or wait to join until the minimum requirements can be met. Full members are loaned a yellow jacket and shirt and it is their responsibility to maintain them. The Sheriff retains the right to dismiss any member deemed unfit.
