The nationwide motto for Search and Rescue “so that others may live” is what motivates every volunteer member on the Team. However, the Team cannot accomplish the mission without the generous support of its donors.
Currently, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Search and Rescue Team depends upon outside funding for nearly all of its operational budget including:
- Support for ongoing training in Search Management, Tracking Skills, Technical Rescue, ATV certification, advanced medical, etc.
- Purchasing specialized equipment such as computers and specialized software, radios, GPS units, ropes and climbing gear, AEDs, uniform jackets and shirts, and rescue and first aid equipment
- Replacing disposable supplies, such as first aid supplies, batteries, printer supplies and paper, and worn/damaged or lost equipment, such as Team radios, GPS units, ropes and hardware used during the missions.
The SCSO does provide space for SAR equipment, team training and meetings at the Armory in Yreka. It also provides vehicles, fuel and maintenance. Vehicle maintenance is especially important, as the SAR Team’s vehicles are very old with very high mileage and were recycled from the Sheriff’s Office fleet or other agencies.
The Team is not compensated for their efforts yet they spend considerable amounts of their own money for personal equipment and transportation to and from searches and training. All team members undergo hundreds of hours of professional level training and regular certification to maintain their skills and mission readiness. Team members often use vacation days or take unpaid leave from work to respond to callouts.
